My Alaskan Cruise Adventure
Kayaks, Glaciers, and Once-in-a-Lifetime Adventures on an Alaska Cruise
By Reed Ulmer, Travel Advisor
Alaska is one of those destinations that stays with you long after the trip ends. Last summer, I experienced it firsthand on a Norwegian Cruise Line Alaska cruise, and I’m sharing everything you need to know—from breathtaking glaciers to kayaking with whales—to help you plan your own adventure.

Anchorage: Your Gateway to Alaska
Our trip began in Anchorage, which, while not the most bustling part of Alaska, gave us a fantastic introduction to the state. Anchorage had a calm, quiet vibe while we were there, but we found our highlights.
We took a tourist bus around the city, learning quirky facts and local history. Dinner at Simon and Seaforts Saloon & Grill was a standout—fresh seafood, great atmosphere, and beautiful views.
Pro Tip: Even if you only have a day in Anchorage, this combination of sightseeing and a quality meal is a great introduction.
Scenic Train Ride to Whittier
The next morning, we hopped on the train to Whittier, and it was breathtaking. Towering mountains, sparkling rivers, and glimpses of glaciers made it feel like stepping into a postcard. We enjoyed mimosas in the glass-domed observation car, a relaxing way to take it all in.
Life Onboard Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line offers all-inclusive luxury with adventure, making it easy to relax while exploring. The ship had:
Multiple restaurants and bars
A full-service spa and fitness center
Casino and entertainment options
We balanced onboard relaxation with thrilling excursions, making the most of every port.
Hubbard Glacier: Nature’s Majesty
One of the first stops was Hubbard Glacier, and it did not disappoint. From the deck of the cruise ship, we had perfect views of the massive, blue-tinted ice wall stretching across the horizon. The surrounding scenery—snowcapped mountains, sparkling water, and little ice chunks drifting by—was equally stunning. Some ice floes had seals or sea lions lounging in the sun. The whole scene felt like a living postcard.
Icy Strait Point: Kayaking with Whales
The highlight of the trip was kayaking with humpback whales at Icy Strait Point. Paddling in calm, clear water, we were close enough to see the whales’ sprays and ripples. It was quiet except for the sound of paddles and whales breathing—a surreal and peaceful experience.
Pro Tip: Book excursions like this early, as spots fill up fast.
Juneau: Helicopter Tours & Dog Sledding
Juneau offered a mix of adventure and awe. We took a helicopter to a glacier, then went dog sledding on the ice. Seeing the huskies sprint across the glacier and feeling the crisp air around us made Juneau unforgettable.

Skagway: Small Town Fun
Skagway is a charming gold rush town with a year-round population of about 1,200 people. We spent the day day-drinking around town, hopping from one bar to another, and even met a friend-of-a-friend at a local spot—only in a town this small!
Pro Tip: Skagway’s cozy streets make it perfect for exploring on foot.
Ketchikan: Salmon Fishing & Waterfront Fun
Ketchikan, the “Salmon Capital of the World,” offered a relaxing day. We went salmon fishing, but didn’t catch anything. Still, the boat ride, fresh air, and views made it a fun experience—even while recovering from Skagway.
Vancouver: Cruise Finale
We finished our cruise in Vancouver, a city with mountains on one side and the ocean on the other. It was the perfect way to end an unforgettable trip.
Final Thoughts & Travel Tips
Alaska is truly magical, and a Norwegian Cruise Line Alaska cruise makes it easy to experience the best of it with comfort and adventure. My top tips:
Book excursions early – Helicopter tours, dog sledding, and kayaking fill fast.
Dress in layers – Alaska weather changes quickly.
Balance ship time and shore time – Both are incredible.
Capture memories – Photos don’t do it justice, but you’ll want plenty!
